Five of Heinlein’s science fiction stories were adapted for the NBC radio series Dimension X in 1950–51.

  1. “Destination Moon”—adapted from the 1950 Destination Moon screenplay, on which Heinlein collaborated—aired on June 24, 1950.
  2. “The Roads Must Roll”—published in Astounding Science Fiction, June 1940—aired on September 1, 1950.
  3. “Universe” (Astounding Science Fiction, May 1941) aired on November 25, 1950.
  4. “The Green Hills of Earth” (Saturday Evening Post, February 8, 1947) aired on December 24, 1950.
  5. “Requiem” (Astounding Science Fiction, January 1940) aired on September 22, 1951.

  1. “adapted” is the key word… So often these stories were so substantially changed that they no longer contain the touches that made the originals great. For example, the adaptation of Leiber’s masterful A Pail of Air was transformed completely with unfortunate sexist comments added which weren’t in the original.

    But yeah, it’s cool to think that these programs had thousands and thousands listening :)

  2. It might be an interesting experiment to “re-issue” the original stories as podcasts, and give listeners the opportunity to tell the difference (and to choose which version they like best).
